Instead of vilifying peaceful protestors, the Trump Admin. should be focused on the very real and looming threat of white supremacist violence.& In the Judiciary Committee today, I pressed @HomelandKen & @USAttyNealyCox on whether or not they agree.
Last week, our nation mourned the loss of John Lewis. Rep. Lewis lived a life dedicated to non-violence & peaceful protest. Perhaps protesters in Portland can learn from the example John Lewis set. ;Looking forward to Thursday’s HSGAC hearing on ongoing events in Portland.

The reports of aggressive tactics being deployed against peaceful protesters should concern every American. I asked @HomelandKen at @DHSgov to clarify what rules of engagement federal law enforcement are following when deployed in Portland and other cities.
Sen. @tedcruz: Those rioters arent concerned about racial justice…Their actions are profoundly racist, the rioters, as they destroy minority communities, minority businesses, and minority lives across this country…Peaceful protests must be protected. Riots must be stopped.

I testified at todays Senate Judiciary Committee hearing about the Trump administrations violent use of force against peaceful protestors in Portland. Donald Trump, Chad Wolf and Bill Barr must be held accountable for trampling on Americans constitutional rights.
Peaceful protests must be protected. Riots must be stopped. No one has the right to assault another person, to firebomb a building, to throw a Molotov cocktail into a police car. Thats not exercising a constitutional rightthats terrorizing your fellow citizens.

It is an affront to civil liberties for unidentified federal agents to enter a US city over the objections of its mayor, and to detain peaceful protesters. Trump is creating chaos so he can call himself the “Law and Order President.” And it’s as shameful as it is transparent.
Q: Thoughts on Portland and deploying armed forces? I always defend peaceful protest. That is our constitutional right. But when you are destroying buildings and throwing rocks, that should not be permitted. The Marshalls have a responsibility to protect our federal buildings.
