According to two people who were witness to a phone call between Trump and Ukraine’s president, Trump wanted Ukraine to reopen a corruption investigation in Ukraine that involved Joe Biden’s son. Trump’s lawyer Rudolph Giuliani was also involved as the liaison, at one point telling the Ukrainian president’s aide that Ukraine owes it to America to disclose information on Biden to the US.
U.S Embassy officials were not briefed on the discussions between Giuliani and Ukraine and learned through Ukrainians later about the discussions.
In May, former Ukrainian prosecutor general said there was no evidence against Biden.
Ukraine was denied a meeting with the White House, a decision that three people familiar with the discussion say was made by Trump even though the rest of the administration wanted a meeting. It was also disclosed that the White House put $250 million in military aid for Ukraine on hold after Trump reviewed the assistance package. According to some sources’ interpretation, Trump wanted both the meeting and the military aid postponed until Ukraine gave him evidence of Biden’s wrong doing.
Giuliani said he was not told about the $250 million in aid.
Rep. Suzan DelBene (D) tweeted that, “This is disturbing. Congress has a duty to perform oversight over this matter. Americans deserve to know what this whistleblower found so alarming about the presidents conversation that they needed to report it to authorities.”
Rep. John Garamendi (D) tweeted, “I am traveling to Ukraine this month to meet with the nations leaders. I will hold discussions on this matter and inquire about the conversations Rudy Giuliani and President Trump have had with Ukrainian.”
Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D) tweeted, “If true, this attempt to get the Ukrainian leader to interfere in our elections is an illegal abuse of power. Its downright criminal if Trump was using $250M of U.S. assistance as a quid pro quo. And blocking a whistleblower is a cover-up.”
Justin Amash (R) tweeted, “Congress must have access to the whistleblower complaint allegedly involving Ukraine. Reports suggest the president abused his position by engaging in conduct that violates the public trust. Lets hear from the whistleblower so we can clear the president or hold him accountable.”
Rep. Jim Banks (R) tweeted, “Special treatment and nepotism are the consistent themes running through the story of Hunter Bidens life. If he and his father are guilty of corruption, we need to know. @realDonaldTrump had every right to ask Ukraine to investigate.”
President Donald Trump (R) tweeted, “The Radical Left Democrats and their Fake News Media partners, headed up again by Little Adam Schiff, and batting Zero for 21 against me, are at it again! They think I may have had a dicey conversation with a certain foreign leader based on a highly partisan whistleblowers…”
